judgetonypowellJudicial activism is rampant in this day and age. The Wichita Christian Chamber of Commerce will address this issue at its next meeting May 19 at the Larkspur restaurant in Old Town. Judge Tony Powell serves in the Sedgwick County District Court presiding of the Family Law Department.

Sedgwick County District Court Judge Anthony Powell currently serves as the presiding judge in the Family Law Department. During his tenure on the bench, Judge Powell has served in the Family Law, Civil, and Criminal Departments where he has presided over hundreds of trials. Judge Powell was unopposed for re-election in 2006, and received high marks from the members of the bar in a Wichita Eagle survey of local judges and their performance conducted that year. Judge Powell also serves on the End of Life Issues committee of the Judicial Council, and the Kansas Supreme Court's Domestic High Conflict Committee.

Prior to Judge Powell’s election to the bench, he served eight years as a member of the Kansas House of Representatives where he served as Majority Whip, and as chairman of several committees including Federal and State Affairs, Ethics and Elections, and the Joint Committee on State-Tribal Relations. He also served as Vice-Chairman of the Taxation Committee. Judge Powell was formerly an attorney for nearly a dozen years with the law firm of Martin and Churchill, Chtd., where his practice emphasized business and employment law. Prior to his legal career, Judge Powell served as Legislative Director to U.S. Congressman William Broomfield and as an intern on the staff of Senator Bob Dole.

Judge Powell received his undergraduate degree from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., in 1985, and his law degree, with honors, from Washburn University School of Law in 1991, where he was a member of the Law Journal and Moot Court Board.

Judge Powell is married and has four children. He is a member of Central Christian Church.
